First Rodeo

Story Behind The Song

The opening riff came to me one day in the car, and it was such a strong concept I built the song around it. I wanted it to have a Southern Rock edge as well as being Country.

Song Description

Male vocal with plenty of harmonies (including an a-capella opening), featuring pedal steel, dobro and mandolin accents as well as more standard instrumentation. 122 BPM. Song about seeing the end of a relationship, but preparing to move ahead with your life. Lyrics

It's not my first rodeo. I've fallen plenty of times before.
But this one hurt a little more - I didn't see it coming from you.
I guess I should have seen the signs, the holes your alibis.
Now you wanna say goodbye, there's nothin' more I can do.

The Oath of Love says, 'First: Do no harm.'
That's the way it should be.
Then you walked into another man's arms - it wasn't easy to see.
We had it all! Well, we had enough,
Or so I thought before things got rough.
I never knew you were havin' second thoughts about us.
Whatever happened to love?

It's not my first rodeo. I've been thrown a hundred times before.
But this one hurt a little more - I didn't see it coming from you.
Just imagine my surprise - I shoulda seen it in your eyes.
Now you've gone and said goodbye,
There's nothin' more I can do.

I'm headin' out now. I'll start again. That's the way it should be.
Not concentratin' on the rear-view mirror is doin' wonders for me.
I hope you find your peace of mind - no more livin' as 3-of-a-kind.
Maybe some day you'll wish you'd given that chance to us,
Before you fell out of love.

It's not my first rodeo. Kicked while I'm down many times before.
But this one hurt a little more - I didn't see it coming from you.
I think it's time to move along. Time to write another song.
Forget about you bein' gone, and things that we went through.
I'll get back on that horse again, I'm ready for someone new!

Nicely done tune with really good lyrics and instrumentation and a memorable hook.
