At Christmas Time

Story Behind The Song

This song has done me well live and online but was in need of re-recording. Heavenly choirs and over-orchestration have been stripped away and a lighter arrangement applied.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS
© 2011 Lyrics & Music by Bob Bentley

Verse One:
The young girl watches in the street as people load their cars
Bulging bags of presents, the bottles and the jars
But she's heard it from her mother that her money won't go far
Don't forget them all at Christmas time

Verse Two:
The soldier keeps his head down as he shelters from the blast.
He shivers in the sunshine as the fragments whistle past
Never thinking what the day is, only "could it be his last"
Don't forget them all at Christmas Time

Chorus 1:
When you're singing Hark The Herald and Good Christian Men Rejoice
Just take some time to think about the words behind the voice
The birthday of the boy child was to give us all a choice
So think about mankind at Christmas time

Verse Three:
It's been this way for some time since she walked out of their home
Though her children are all with her, she's never felt so all alone
She couldn't take the beatings, so they've struck out on their own
But she feels the bruises more at Christmas time

Chorus 2:
So gather friends and family round and hold them very tight
But don't forget the story that's behind the Christmas Night
Spare a thought for others who are trying to get it right
Think about them all at Christmas Time

Think about them all at Christmas Time
Don't forget them all at Christmas Time

Good job, nice sentiment on the lyrics. The arrangement is well done and it's well played too.
The backing vocals are nice and really fit the performance.

This pensive lovely song and Gordon Lightfoot's "Circle of Steel" could be sister songs. Beginning with five notes that are very hooky and are repeated as a backdrop throughout the song, this song successfully has that Christmas time feel. It is a story very well told and a story to make you consider what humankind is about. The melody is unforgettable. Is there a place for a song like this? There certainly should be! There was for "Circle of Steel."
