The Motion Sick Bio
The Motion Sick is a socially aware, DIY indie rock band with a focus on
dynamic, diverse music, energetic live shows, and insightful lyrics.
Despite just breaking into the scene this year with the release of their debut album,
Her Brilliant Fifteen, The Motion Sick has already garnered substantial national
press highlighted by several mentions in SPIN magazine including the half-page
honor of being selected as "band of the month" as a result of an initial "band of the
day" feature on SPIN.com and a track in a "Spin Essential Mix – Music You Need to
Download Now!"
The album has received airplay and charting (including several CMJ Top 30 #1s) on
dozens of college and commercial stations nationwide including several prominent
Boston stations: WFNX, WBCN, WERS, WMFO, and WMBR. In addition to airplay,
the band, critically cited for its energetic live performances, has recently completed
its first tour and signed a publishing deal with Blue Scout Music.
All in all, it's pretty clear that The Motion Sick, a band whose name is derived from
Victorian-era pirate slang for stowaways, won't make anyone queasy with their
debut LP, Her Brilliant Fifteen. With nods to the popular music of the 50s, 60s, and
80s (the omission of the 70s was quite intentional), Her Brilliant Fifteen still
manages to rise above the current recycled-rock trend to provide a refreshing, and
often surprising, blend of hipster indie pop/rock, alt-rock, alt-country, and all with a
sprinkling of old-school punk attitude. The strong focus of the band is on lyrical
insightfulness and candor. Her Brilliant Fifteen is loaded with introspective stabs
and clever quips and has the narrative power to draw in a broad range of listeners,
young and old.
