Story Behind The Song
I was in a relationship with someone I loved really dearly, we had finally gotten back together after a year apart, and it was better than ever. I began to write what would become Getaway Driver as a love song. It was coming quickly; the chords and the melodies appeared in front of me without thinking. About 20 minutes into writing, I got a call. We couldn't be together anymore, not because we weren't in love but because situations change. The reasons we couldn't be together is not my story to tell so I won't say more. A complete left turn.
As a way to deal with the sadness I picked up the song again right after the call. Everything came to me almost instantly. I still have a demo on my computer of the song, fully structured, the lyrics almost the same. Between when the call ended and the demo was first recorded was 26 minutes. But that demo is way too intimate to ever share.
The last line of the song is my favorite line from any song of mine, but I didn't write it:. It's something Anthony Bourdain says in an episode of No Reservations. "They say as gamblers, we long to lose". It always stuck with me but when this happened I knew exactly what he meant.

Lyrics
We need to find a better way to get away from
all the things that we say wrong
we don't know when to say them
we don't know when to play dumb
Never felt like interrogations
before we waited for too long
To make our lovesick confessions
and we've waited for too long
too long
I thought that this was your love song
got the tenses all wrong
I thought that this was your love song
Pulled away now you're gone
you're gone
You're the getaway driver
who drove away too soon
without any of the pain
without any of the pursuit
you're the getaway driver
drive as far as you can
drive away from me baby
drive away from our plans
There's a ghost at the door
and she's calling our name
if we don't let her in
things'll end just the same
the same the same
I Thought that this was your love song
got the tenses all wrong
I thought that this was your love song
Pulled away now you're gone
you're gone
You're the getaway driver
who drove away too soon
without any of the pain
without any of the pursuit
you're the getaway driver
drive as far as you can
drive away from me baby
drive away from our plans
They say as gamblers
That we long to lose
now look at us baby
tell em that we're proof
