Puppy Dog Eyes

Story Behind The Song

Originally scored for SATB as a '50s-style doo-wop tune, Puppy Dog Eyes sounds a bit more barbershop-ish when I sang all the parts myself. It was just a cutesy idea I came up with long ago and a little bit of fun.

Song Description

This is not the first time I treated '50s style music in an a cappella setting. Do You Ever Dream, from my 1993 CD Good Advice For the Damned was also a similar style. Puppy Dog Eyes was actually written not too long after, but is a far more sophisticated song musically. The lyrics are bubble gum. The original SATB score had a soprano melody which I sing and octave lower, but the alto takes the melody on the bridge, which is why the bridge, in the octave written for alto, is fairly high in my tenor/baritone range, particularly compared to the rest of the song.
