Story Behind The Song
I was touring to promote the album before this and was interviewed live on Dutch television. The host interviewed me in Dutch (which I don't speak) and knowing I wouldn't understand said that I looked a lot better on my album cover than in person. The audience was laughing, but I didn't know why. When my manager explained it to me, I waited for the host to get off the air and told him what I thought of him, specifically, that he sucked, and that people like him make being a musician no fun. So, I left acting tough, but spent the rest of the tour constantly checking myself out in the mirror and thinking that he was right, that I looked tired and not so pretty. It was a tough one!
Song Description
Chorus contains phrase "I'm not queen of anything any more." It's about feeling small suddenly, but not terrible, just like the world put you in your place for the moment and you're humbled. The hook is really the one word repeating, "why?" a sort of calm

Lyrics
Flew out of Amsterdam,
put up one hand
on the window to say goodbye.
I'd been so lonely there, but
I'm lonely everywhere, even though
they'd been so nice.
I'm not the queen of anything anymore.
I know I'm not beautiful, just tired
and getting old.
And ready for bed, and starting to cry,
and I don't even know why.
Why, why......
The boys were good to me,
we stayed up all night playing cards,
betting mints and pills.
I kept drinking then, just to keep it light
though I wanted to spill my soul out
to anyone, to them, to call them my friends
but it was too soon for that.
I'm not the queen of anything, any more.
I know I'm not beautiful, just tired
and getting old.
And ready for bed and starting to cry,
and I don't even know why.
Why, why.......
