Story Behind The Song
The song is an autobiographical sketch. Fairly self explanatory, I was confronted with the reality of finding my wife with another man.
Song Description
A man is shocked when he comes home and finds his wife in bed with another man. He leaves his home and recalls the good times they had. He knows that he's not violent enough to confront them and so he drives aimlessly as the song ends.

Lyrics
Very Sad Man
He pulls up shy of the driveway and the lights are all out in the house
He knew that they would be and he wants to surprise her
So he goes in quiet like a mouse
And she is lying in another man's arms
He knows those shoes on the floor
So he picks up his keys and the broken pieces of his heart
And he walks out the door
CHORUS
There's a very, very, very sad man driving away tonight
He's the very, very, very same man who thought everything was all right
Now he can see the tear in his rearview mirror as he pulls on out of sight
And the very, very, very sad man don't know where he's going tonight
He thinks back on days that were happy
When she finally said she'd be his wife
'Til it turned out she wanted much more than he could give
And she didn't want a music man's life
So he closed his eyes to the problems
Now it's too late to put it in view
He thinks, "You always see these things happening to others
And you don't think they can happen to you".
CHORUS
He thinks of the murder he'd like to commit
But he knows he's not that kind of man
So he throws it in "park" and he sits in the dark
He buries his face in his hands
And the very, very, very sad man
Is driving my car tonight
He's the very, very, very same man who thought everything was all right
Now he can see the tear in his rearview mirror
And five'll get you ten
That the very, very, very sad man
Will never be the same again
