																Lyrics

									Night Noises
The house is old and big and cold,
it shrugs and settles down.
At night the steam heat bangs and spits,
the stairs creak in the dark..
I hear the swish of taffeta,
smell port wine and cigars..
The ghosts are in the parlor,
the burglar's on the stairs.
He tiptoes up and down all night,
deciding what to take.
And upstairs, in the guest rooms,
the squatters sneak about.
They're wonderfully clever,
Never to be seen.
Their whispered conversations
go on throughout the night,
the muffled sounds come trickling down,
I never catch the words,
the creaking of the floorboards
blocks everything they say.
By morning everybody
who filled my night with noise
has disappeared completely.
But they'll be back tonight.
