Have you ever noticed that when someone asks if you'll accept some constructive criticism, THEY are the ones who get to decide if it is constructive? Robert Frost said, "A poem cannot be worried into existence." NEVER accept critiques of your songs unless they are from someone who will license the song if you make some changes.

I just got an unasked-for and negative critique on a song I have licensed 10 times.

Every single song I have ever had licensed, released on radio, or signed with a publishing company had been criticized to the point people thought I should not pitch them.

You can't help but realize that a great many providers do not know how to 1. Describe their music needs accurately, or 2. Screen songs accurately. I often get the feeling they are just listening to 5 seconds of each song.

What I learned in 2020. Your worst song is the one they will take. Have multiple mixes and versions, such as vocal, instrumental, 60 sec, 30 sec, brand new feel and genre, etc. Also, I calculated that if I make a million dollars from music, that will come to one dollar per hour.

Through the years, I have found that publishers, producers and music supervisors who have the most stringent rules for how a composition must go have the least success. It is as if they need to sound important because they know they are not.

Yes I started with the video actually. Charlie Chaplin was a clever idea for this one. Did you know he wrote the song "Smile"? Over the loss of his son. The saddest song with the happiest lyric. A true study in emotional contrasts.

I started with the video. Charlie Chaplin was a great touch. He was a songwriter. Wrote "Smile." The saddest happy song I ever heard. Written for the death of his child.

Thanks for the five-star rating, though I consider "Honky Tonk End of Town" to be a horrid little tune. I have found that songwriters seldom have a great appraisal of what are their best and worst songs, so I am throwing this one out there in hopes of finding a buyer who has as poor taste as I had when I wrote it.

I dreamt this song--music, title, lyrics, all of it. I woke up and I could play it immediately. Instant song. "Strangered" is the name of it.

Ok, I have listened to Medimotion and Requiem for a Lost Boy and I am officially a HUGE fan. I am going to listen to everything--a couple at a time so it doesn't become a thing like "get through this list." I want to savor.

Medimotion is so cool! I mean, most meditation music is so bland and vanilla. This is great! Have you thought about getting this song to Justin Bieber? Ok, that's my idea of a hilarious joke.

PS.... I lost forget...I have several projects I am working on right now.

We just released a NEW version of the "Waving Prairie" album. It has been re-mixed, digitized and re-mastered. This updated version is entitled, "THE Waving Prairie". We felt the album deserved an update and we also added a couple great tracks that didn't make the original album because we were under pressure to make the tracks fit on an vinyl record. So, look for my album, "The Waving Prairie"...for the newest updated tracks.... hop you like the songs.....very psychedelic....if you like that kind of thing... (I was VERY psychedelic back then {:?D). )

Hi CodeManiacs,

Hey, thanks for the VERY kind review of my song, "Kites In The County". Appreciate your comments.

There was a kind of magical thing that happened when I recorded this song that led it to this (it's final format). I was working on my second album for Kama Sutra back in 1972 at Wally Heider's Studio in San Francisco. My producer brought in a rising Indian Tabla player, Zakir Hussein, to play tablas on the title track, "Waving Prairie". Zakir loved the track and when we were done, he asked if I had anything else he could play on. I had this song, "Kites In The Country" that was on the list of potential songs we were going to use for this album. I told him about it and started to play a little bit....and he stopped me and said, "Why don't we go in and just play it WITHOUT any rehearsal". I said, "Sure".... so we went back in the studio, my producer set the mics for Zakir's drums, set me up with my guitar mics and a vocal mic....did a little strumming and singing to set the levels.....and I started playing to lay down the groove, thus the longer intro. This is how we sometimes did this back in the 60's and 70's. Once Zakir got the groove...he joined in. I sang the verses and played the guitar and Zakir was grooving on the tablas....and following along with the dynamics. We were "connected" by the song...and it just took us along...then I stopped finger picking and grabbed a pick and we really started to jam and jam and jam....and then....BING.....the song ended. So this was basically, two musicians, one song, no practice, no rehearsal (he had never heard the song).....and one very magical jam....till the end.

Well, at the end, we sat there looking at each other smiling and the folks in the booth were kinda speechless for a good minute till I broke the silence and said, "I think that is a keeper".

Then we went into the booth and listened to it a few times..... and the song wound up on the album with no changes. Cool when this stuff happens.

Anyhow, thanks again for the review. You may want to stop and listen to the other song that Zakir played on, "Waving Prairie". His work really helped to make the song....and I don't think he did but 2-3 takes and we were in the booth drinking some lemon tea.

Best to you,

Chet Nichols
