Story Behind The Song
It's about sometimes we lead, sometimes we follow.
Song Description
Rhythmically it reminds me of Steve Miller's "The Joker." In the recording, Fred Tackett, from Little Feat, is playing guitar. When I wrote it I was a prep cook at a restaurant, and I was literally serving up certain things with a giant ice cream scoop to make sure we got equal portions. The lyric suggests at times we need to be the driver of our fate, and at other times it's best to sit back and just enjoy the ride.

Lyrics
For What
I hear everybody wants
Something from me
We could use an ice cream scoop
It's a sure-fire way to get equal portions
Right now, everybody wants it
Right now right now right now
I think about a shotgun theory
Spread myself wide, bigger bigger opportunity
Think about a process of elimination
Seamless exact opportunity
For what
For what
I'll show you, Follow me
Watch me do my thangy thang
I wanna be your driver
Lay back enjoy the ride x2
You see I let 'em poke and prod
Push & pull and twist
I dismissed all forms of love
And forgiveness to myself
What do you want from me
Am I in your way?
After the house, the cars,
The business, all your bitchin you're gonna say
It was all for what
Opportunity
I'll show you, Follow me
Watch me do my thangy thang
I wanna be your driver
Lay back enjoy the ride x2
I see myself fifty years from now
Underneath the ground and my memories
Won't last past two generations
Just two generations
For what
For what
I'll show you, Follow me
Watch me do my thangy thang
I wanna be your driver
Lay back enjoy the ride
Enjoy
Spread some joy
