World on Fire

Story Behind The Song

I'm always interested in one string bottom riffs that use the rattle and buzz characteristics overdrive and feedback give to the electric guitar. The bottom "G" "F" on E and "Bb" "C" on A string get a lot of attention from me. This song is just an attempt to derive some funky bottom out of the low riff and play some center and upper triads in contrast. This song is a (a)verse, chorus, (b)verse, (a)verse, chorus, (b)verse, (a)verse, chorus, vamp on to outro. I notate like ABCABCAB song, which featuees to alternative style verses and a guitar vamp. The rhythm and timing can get complicated. But, usually the complications come from the creativity afforded by the arrangement. In this case words fell in time and across time with segments. In any case, hindsight is 20/20. what matters it what feels good and that is what i went with.

Song Description

A venture originally intended to loosely follow the style of "If Six Was Nine" by Jimi Hendrix. That didn't happen, but it didn't take me long to figure out I was liking what was evolving. The song is mathematically intense and I had to chart out the timing to get the (A) verses, half on and half off the riff (to fit the guitar giggle every so often), Then came the chorus which is reminiscent of the Rover by Led Zeppelin in that the chords are stroked and strummed so they're full sounding into the (B) verses which pedal on a different theme, rhythm and chord figure. Finally, the last time around, the lead guitar pans through the speakers in circles and steadily heads into orbit until the end. If you have ear goggles on, you can get dizzy.

Lyrics

The world is on fire and the people keep it burning
The flames keep getting higher, Time it keeps on turning
Everything changes, everything stays the same
I don't ask about, I don't know who to blame

The world is on fire, the world is on fire
People keep it burning, people keep it burning

Every time I give in I lose a piece of myself
only to awake and find I'm somebody else
Might be a friend or the neighbor next door
but by then it really doesn't matter anymore.

Hey mister politician won't you listen to me
I'm not as stoned as I used to be
I'm getting tired of hearing what
You're trying to make me see
Tell me about your problems?
I don't live that kind of fight
I ain't your sister or your cousin
I damn sure ain't your wife.

The world is on fire, the world is on fire
People keep it burning, people keep it burning

Well there's people on my left and people on my right
people light as day, people dark as night
Criminals don't scare me I know where that will end
It's people with a smile who walk up calling me their friend

Don't rap like a salesman and bind me in a glove
You chain down my future tie it up with lies
Don't tell me about your problems
I don't live that kind of fight
I ain't your sister or your cousin
I damn sure ain't your wife.

The world is on fire, the world is on fire
People keep it burning, people keep it burning
