this was conceived for a movie about the war in iraq. the muezzin recording at the beginning of the piece was recorded in the spring of 2006 at Yeni Cami in Istanbul

the first part is dark and sinister-sounding, beginning with a non-metered segment heard over the ezan (call to prayer)...the rhythm gradually develops and a melody emerges...the second part is just another incarnation of the first melody, only faster tempo and more accessible
