Portrait in the Sand

Story Behind The Song

A card I once received from my deceased husband which show the words "I love You" before a wave crashes, and still there after it crashes and retreats. That didn't work for my soldier girl so I revised it to suit.

Lyrics

PORTRAIT IN THE SAND

INTRO There's a quiet in the battle now
I'm not feeling very brave--Need you here to hold me safe

VERSE Remember when I last saw you
how we smiled through our fear
we knew I had to leave for war
trembled as we stowed my gear
Then you wrapped me in your arms --
said you'd never let me go
RISE I tried to memorize your face
Oh baby, I love you so

CHORUS I draw your portrait in the sand
run my fingers through your hair.
Poke a dimple in your cheek
I used to kiss you there
Soon I'll be home with the real live you
But today I need to hold your hand
So on this desert far away
I draw your portrait in the sand.

VERSE I asked you to pray for me
Guess you did, cause I'm all right
My crew are all stand-up guys
and their morale is high.
But I've seen things I can't forget--
don't know what tomorrow holds
RISE Tonight I need to feel you near
Oh baby, I love you so

CHOR I draw your portrait in the sand
run my fingers through your hair.
Poke a dimple in your cheek
I used to kiss you there
Soon I'll be home with the real live you
But today I need to hold your hand
So on this desert far away
I draw your portrait in the sand

BRIDGE Tell me, is the grass still green
does our creek still flow, wildflowers grow?
Tell me, is the air still sweet
no blood--no tanks, do we still give blessed thanks?

CHOR I draw your portrait in the sand
run my fingers through your hair.
Poke a dimple in your cheek
I used to kiss you there
Soon I'll be home with the real live you
But today I need to hold your hand
So on this desert far away
I draw your portrait in the sand

REPRISE Oh baby, the battle's started up again,
the noise of mortars hurts my head
can't dream about you any more--Gotta go to war instead.
