Excess Baggage

Story Behind The Song

I was widowed and re-entering the dating world and certainly finding many of the women I came across were carrying excess baggage. Optimist I am, I figure this could all be dealt with.

Song Description

Hmmmm, can a guy convince a girl to leave behind a lifetime of baggage that slows down progress in life? Is a fresh start possible with nothing more than a guitar on your back? Let's hope so. :)

Lyrics

She said she had some baggage, I said, "Well that's OK,
That really doesn't mean, I'm not going to stay."

Then she brought out several steamer trunks said, "These I really need,
They're moments from the past, that I keep trying to feed."
Next a couple more suitcases, those nice black ones on wheels
I took a look and said, "So now just what's the deal?"

"Oh, this one's filled with stones, from my last relationship
and that is every time, from my childhood when I'd slip"
I said, "I'm not sure if I should ask, about those over there."
She gave me a list of ailments, from her toes up to her hair.

Then I glanced at the carry ons, "Now aren't you allowed just two?"
She said, "They're all the things I need, if I'm going to get through
to my destination, where I'm not sure what waits
Now be a dear start loading them, I don't want to be late
and miss some great experiences, with you down the road
Now go on be a dear, and shoulder all my load."

Then instead of looking through, she actually looked right at me
Said, "Babe something missing, that I just don't see
Now where are YOUR bags dear man, this just don't seem right."
I just smiled and related how I like to travel light.

"Now I do bring along this old guitar, it's how I feed my soul
and I would strongly suggest, that it's time at last to throw
out those things that weigh you down, delay your destination
Let's leave 'em for baggage handling, save my back the aggravation."
Oh, when at last we took off, had just the clothes upon our back
And of course, my old guitar, to keep our souls on track....
