Ready to Say

Story Behind The Song

Inspired by conversation with a friend whose girlfriend left him shortly after his 40th birthday. He expressed regrets for not having told her "I Love You" until it was too late.

Song Description

The lyrics are a bit whimsical, but the message is not. The song is sung from the viewpoint of someone whose true love left him. He cites many times he put things off in his life, always coming back to the most important one -- waiting too long to tell her her loved her.

Lyrics

Now that the sun is coming up
I'm ready to put the cat out
Now that the guests have all arrived
I'm rolling the 'Welcome' mat out

Now that the snow is falling down
I'm ready to round the leaves up
Now that the work is almost done
I'm ready to roll my sleeves up

All of the doves are flying away
Circling high above you
And now that I know you've gone away
I'm ready to say "I Love You"

Now that the fish are upside-down
I'm ready to clean the water
Now the the flies are all inside
I might as well close the screen door

Now that they've flown out the window
I'm ready to feed the birdies
Now that I've hit the big four-oh
I'm ready to plan for my thirties

All of the doves are flying away
Circling high above you
And now that I know you've gone away
I'm ready to say "I Love You"

Now that you've run out of ice cream
I'm ready to choose a flavor
Now that you no longer need it
I'm ready to do you a favor

Now that the car's run out of gas
I'm ready to look for a station
Now that there's no tomorrow left
I think I'll take a long vacation

All of the doves are flying away
Circling high above you
And now that I know you've gone away
I'm ready to say "I Love You"
