This is a total restoration of this recording from 1971 and is featured on the new CD, "Beetles Are Coming". This song came from Chet's first CD, "Time Loop" and uses a very interesting tuning. The whole record is filled with songs based on unusual tunings and string configurations.SO, a little heads-up about this song. I wrote it back in 1969 so the song is much more "free-form" than songs of today. It is just me and guitar with a very special tuning. People have asked how I got 2-3 guitars to sound so "together". Well, it is just one guitar. Now, the song has some long instrumental sections, so it is kind of a solo jam piece that features some of my guitar work back then.
It's kind of a Joni Mitchell-meets-Lindsey Buckingham-meets-John Fahey-meets-Stephen Stills type of song.
Music was much more free-form back then and this song gives you a taste of that. Today, aside from being a song to enjoy with a great set of headphones, it would probably be a very nice song for a film about counter-cultures and social evolution.
Song Description
This is a song about the evolution and changes that took place duing the 1960's and 70's....and are resurrecting today. Like everything else, change happens and you must learn to move on. Things in life become stagnant and corrupted if you don't. During the 60's and 70's it was a magical time until the greed and egotisim of vanity, excess, drugs, progressive radical politics and insecure egotism replaced the struggling awakening of personal freedom and spiritual responsibility. That said, this is also a very spiritual song because the cultural agenda freaks where trying to hijack this awakening to be used for THEIR agenda instead of honoring the higher aspirations and potential that was struggling to take hold.
This song is a lament that the high ideals were discarded and the singer of this song sees that and walks away from it, seeking new potential away from the ruins of a once life-changing event. But, change is always leading us and the true spiritual rebels are in the front row cutting a path for others to follow away from the "beetles" that emerge from the ruins....

You dress yourself up to look like an elf
And you walk around this place
With a sign against the rat race
And you go get wood to cover the fire
Then you reverently place it down upon yourself
So, you'd better get your hoe
And clean up your garden
Because the beetles are coming
The leaves are enough to turn you on
You know this, so you start a collection
There are greens, reds, yellows, golds and candels
But, what will happen to them
Once they?ve dropped their bomb
So, you?d better get your hoe
And clean up your garden
Because the beetles are coming
So, you go and get a big brown shopping bag
And in it you place your hair your roaches and part of your life
And you drop it from the long shoestring bridge by the ocean
An silently wave goodbye as it sails for Japan
The you turn to look one last look at The City
Then start to thumb to the world that?s, oh, so gritty
So, you?d better get your hoe
And clean up your garden
Because the beetles are coming
