Story Behind The Song
I was looking for a "meaning of life" song that was neither traditional religion nor some simplistic "look on the sunny side" thing. I wanted a big picture, whole story. Interesting detail: the line "we carry and we're buried with old charms..." came to me as I glanced out adn saw a funeral procession passing on the street!
Song Description
A deeply philosophical statement disguised as a cross between a Salvation Army band and a gospel song with a close harmony back-up group.

Lyrics
When the night is feeling long
Some tell you life is just a song
They could be wrong
How can you tell
When to buy, when to sell?
When things are getting thick
You're tired and sick
You need a fix - you want it quick
Who'll ring the bell
To guide you out of your hell?
When all is said and done
Nobody's won
It's still all up to you
Living in a funhouse
We just reflect
All the things we can't prove
Sometimes we're obscure
Sometimes we lead the news
Take one more step
What's there to lose
In believing in leaving what just leaves us screwed
and stumbling toward something
as yet untried but true.
When your friends have flown the coop
You're in the soup
And life has thrown you for a loop
How can you know
How to go with the flow?
We all have hit the wall
We've had to crawl
Just making summer into fall,
What is the flow
That kicks us up from below?
And sure, we crash and burn
Sometimes we learn
Sometimes we just crash anew
We carry - and we're buried-
With old charms that can't see us through
Sometimes we find love
Sometimes we sing the blues
Take one more step
What's there to lose
In believing in leaving what just leaves us screwed
And stumbling toward something
as yet untried but true.
