Dead Man in a Dream

Story Behind The Song

This song was based on a very true story. In February of 2009, I had a dream that I was backstage at a show when I was approached out of the blue by a hometown friend by the name of Chris. In reality, he was one of my first big crushes as a middle schooler and the first boy I ever kissed. In the dream I was really surprised to see him and all he did was approach me, give me a big hug and put his hand on my shoulder to say "You're going to be alright." At that point in the dream, I remember looking at him and saying "Hey wait, I thought you died in a car crash...." He just pulled away, smiled and then I work up. I was kind of shook up when I came out of it, thinking how strange it was for someone so long gone to appear in my dreams and wondering what my subconscious was trying to tell me. I rolled out of bed and wrote this song in an hour or so. RIP Chris.

Lyrics

A dead man paid me a visit last night
Brought back to life by my sleeping mind
He told me everything would be alright
And he held me one last time

I woke up, shaken
Wondering what it means
A visit from a dead man in a dream

A warm breeze blows in through the open door
But I still feel the cool hands of my midnight troubadour
Saddened, such a shame to die so young
Been so long now that he's been gone

I rise up, rattled
Wondering what it means
A visit from a dead man in a dream

I don't believe in signs
I don't believe in fate
And if he came to save my soul
Oh, Lord
He came too late
He came too late

He told me everything would be alright
And I want to believe him tonight

Night falls, I weary
But I don't want to sleep
Another visit from a dead man in a dream
Visit from a dead man in a dream
