Reach (Instrumental)

Story Behind The Song

Written in 2020 during the early days of the pandemic, the song was my expression of the need to move beyond ourselves and remain open to helping, and being helped by, other people.

Song Description

As the song begins, the singer focuses on his own worries. As the lyrics build to the chorus, a second voice offers her hand in support. The remainder of the song draws on their mutual strength to help them through.

Lyrics

Reach

The hard hour of the night
An ache that knows no end
That time alone can't get right
Steel that just won't bend.
My mind races and I think
How to finally see
What's just beyond the brink
The person I was meant to be.

Reach out, reach out
Take hold of my open hand.
Reach up, reach back
When we lift each other we rise, we learn to stand.

When dawn comes the search seems
To fade away out of sight
Like a host of silent dreams
Afraid to meet sunlight.

The tide will ebb and flow
Are you the one who'll set me free?
There's so much we can't know
Will you promise to stay by me?

Reach out, reach out
Take hold of my open hand.
Reach up, reach back
When we lift each other we rise, we learn to stand.

Reach out, reach out, reach out.
