Take You Home

Story Behind The Song

When you play in lots of clubs, you get to see lots of interesting encounters. At one club, I noticed the same woman night after night who never seemed to leave with the same guy. She didn't seem to be hung up on "love" or "relationships." She just wanted to get laid. She got me thinking about the concept of lust (forget the love). When I brought the song to Bill Bentley, he had the clever idea to turn it into a Manhattan Transfer kind of vocal arrangement. It was a lot of fun to sing all those parts. Later, my brother, Scott and I used the song in our musical, Devil May Care.

Lyrics

Take You Home

I'm in a quandary - what do I do?
You want the barmaid - I just want you
Let's split the difference - who's gonna care?
You've got my address - I'll meet you there

I just want to take you home with me
And show you a real good time
I just want to lay you down beside
My ever-loving mind
I don't know where we're going
And I don't know what we'll find
But I want to take you along for the ride

Well, it's no mystery - just common sense
We've got the history - past and present tense
Let's strip that tension right from your face
If you've got the time, I've got the place

I just want to take you home with me
And soothe your troubled mind
I want to see you take your worries, boy,
And leave them all behind
Well, you just think of me and I will concentrate on you
And somehow we can muddle through

There's no commitment - you'll be just fine
No need to sign on the dotted line
Let's just let nature take its own sweet course
No use denying the gravitational force

I just want to take you home with me
And never let you go
There's so much I want to see
So much I gotta know
Will you love me in the morning
As you love me in the night?
Well, I'd like to find out if you think it's alright
Oh, I just want to take you home
